The artificial of Ayia is located in the village of Ayia; 9km west of Chania.It is a small lake of 450 acres that communicates with the Fasa valley from the south part. This particular valley is supposed to be the most humid valley of Crete. The lake is watered by underground sources and from the Xekolomeno River.
This little lake is a very significant wetland with the greatest variety of plants in Crete, but also very important animal species, such as a special species of fern and frogs. The lake also serves as a refuge for migratory and not migratory birds. The ecologic significance of Ayia Lake is reflected also in the fact that it is an internationally protected lake.
