This is my story of how a holiday trip to Chania, triggered a second business trip in 2020 that got me stranded because of Covid 19, but led me to grow a business, fall in love and decide to move my entire life here.

Charm in a nutshell. Once, these narrow, picturesque alleys behind the Venetian harbor constituted the Jewish hub of Chania and Synagogue Etz Hayyim was the heart of the community.

Otherwise, the Splatzia district. The area that once constituted the Turkish quarter, with Splatzia square in its center, is now a busy, bohemian neighborhood with loads of local flair.

Chania city expanded its reach, outside the Venetian fortress during the last three centuries. The architectural styles in different zones of modern Chania showcase a timeline of how different socio-economic groups settled in the city.

The Gate of Sand. This coastal neighborhood is found east of the old city, right outside the Venetian walls. Small cafes, tavernas and bars give a colorful flair to this calmer side of the old city.

Nea Chora

NEA CHORA

The ‘new country’ of Chania city was just that, for working class religious minorities creating new settlements outside the Venetian walls. Today it boasts the closest beach to the city framed by delicious fish& seafood restaurants.

Chalepa

The historic and aristocratic neighborhood of diplomats and upper-class residents of the late 19th and early 20th still exudes allure and an air of nostalgia making it perhaps the most attractive area of Chania besides the Venetian harbor.

Tabakaria

TABAKARIA

Tabakaria is eerie yet appealing; once an industrial coastal zone in the eastern outskirts of the city. Tabakaria takes after the Turkish word tabak-hane, meaning tannery and today the area is gaining popularity with new uses taking over the abandoned tanneries.

The best views for Greece’s Ethnarch. On a woody hill overlooking the entire city lay the memorial graves of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sofoklis Venizelos, who both served their country as Prime Ministers of Greece.
